A new geopolitical game: Iran is trying to weaken the legitimacy of Pashinyan’s administration, while the West is trying to take charge of regional projects
Tehran benefits from regional conflicts because thus it manages to enter local politics, The Jerusalem Post writes. According to the article, Iran has clear interests in the Caucasus region, and its support for Armenia is understandable. The relationships with Israel often portray Azerbaijan and its president Ilham Aliyev as Israel’s agents in the region, which is a cause for concern in Iran. As regards Armenia, Iran is trying to weaken the legitimacy of the administration of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, who is trying to normalize relations with Azerbaijan. In case of hostilities between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Iran becomes the chief beneficiary as Armenia’s sole window facing the outside world. Advancing its interests in the Caucasus, Iran has entered a new geopolitical game created by the Russian-Ukrainian war.
At the same time, at the meeting of the Collegium of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs chaired by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, it was noted that Washington and Brussels are trying to take charge of the integration projects in Central Asia and the South Caucasus, which are neighboring Russia, thus gaining access to resources under conditions favorable only to the West.
