Russian Foreign Ministry: Agreements in the Armenia-Azerbaijan border delimitation process must be mutually acceptable

At a press briefing, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova commented on the Russian-Azerbaijani relations amid the protests in Armenia and Georgia.

She noted that strategic and partnership relations are being developed with Azerbaijan. Speaking about the “worrying trends” in the South Caucasus, Zakharova noted that they are mainly connected with the “destructive policies of the West”.

According to her, from the point of view of the West, the countries of the region should not regulate relations, but should rather be in conflict. Moreover, they need to push Russia out of the South Caucasus. Zakharova also noted that Russia follows the process of border delimitation between Armenia and Azerbaijan, which has an important role for regional stability.

“We support the delimitation process exclusively though political and diplomatic methods. We consider that agreements should have a stable, balanced nature and be mutually acceptable,” Zakharova noted.

Referring to the protests in Armenia, she noted that, according to the protesters, border delimitation is being carried out “not so fairly”. “Nevertheless, we consider the political processes in Armenia to be domestic policy issues,” Zakharova noted.
