Shots fired near US embassy in Beirut: What is known?
Gunfire was heard near the U.S. Embassy in Beirut. The shots continued for about half an hour. All roads leading to the embassy have been closed.
The embassy reported that the staff members were not injured.
“Investigations are underway and we are in close contact with host country law enforcement,” the U.S. embassy said.
The command of the Lebanese Army also issued a statement, noting that people were injured in the gunfire; the circumstances of the incident are being established.
Various media outlets reported that the gunman was a Syrian national.
