Toivo Klaar: The peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan will have an impact on the EU activities in the region and on a broader regional cooperation

EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus Toivo Klaar answered questions about the peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan in a conversation with the Azerbaijani press.

According to the official, the EU highly appreciates the interest of the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan and other officials to inform the EU about the political developments in the region and the development of the peace process between the two countries.

“We also exchange views on how to use the opportunities to contribute to peace in the region, which means the EU’s high-level support for the normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Although the international engagement in the peace talks has been more limited in recent months than in the previous two years, we are happy to record the progress achieved during the Armenian-Azerbaijani bilateral meetings,” Klaar said.

According to him, the conclusion of a peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan will have a huge impact on both countries and the entire region. This will create a completely new situation, where opportunities for trade and economic interaction will automatically increase.

“This will also have an impact on the EU’s activities in the region, as it will allow us to engage in broader regional cooperation that includes all three countries of the South Caucasus,” the official said.
