Russian senator: The flirtation between the U.S. and Armenia will have negative consequences for the security of the entire South Caucasus

Washington aims to “cut off” Yerevan from Russia and turn Armenia into a tool to exert pressure on Moscow, Russian Senator Konstantin Dolgov told Vzglyad.

Earlier, the Turkish media reported about the intention of the U.S. to open a “southern front” against Russia through Armenia.

“Turkey’s fears are not unfounded. The fact is that the current leadership of Armenia has already taken a number of steps toward the West,” the senator noted. First, we are talking about Yerevan’s rhetoric. Dolgov noted that in Armenia, the issue of the country’s possible withdrawal from the CSTO is often raised, but for now, it is limited to statements. “In addition, joint military exercises of the Armenian and American military are being held, and the issue of deploying a Pentagon representative in the Ministry of Defense of Armenia is being discussed,” the senator added.

In his opinion, all these are links in a chain that will have negative consequences for the entire South Caucasus. “The appearance of the U.S. and NATO and their strengthening will not do anything good for the long-term security of the region… The fiendish plan of the U.S. will have negative consequences for Armenia itself,” the deputy noted, adding that Yerevan’s flirtation with the West has nothing to do with the concern for the country’s security and prosperity.
