The Daily Telegraph: The Iranian president called for an attack on Israeli bases in Azerbaijan
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian called for an attack on Israeli military bases in Azerbaijan, The Daily Telegraph writes.
As reported, Pezeshkian is trying to convince the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to abandon the idea of a direct strike against Israel in retaliation for the assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. He suggested targeting secret Israeli bases in neighboring countries.
Top generals within the IRGC are insisting on a direct strike on Tel Aviv and other Israeli cities, focusing on military bases to avoid civilian casualties.
The newspaper says the ultimate responsibility for deciding how Iran will respond rests with Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the country’s supreme leader.
