Rome reaffirms support for Armenian-Azerbaijani normalization
During negotiations with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Rome, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni spoke in favor of stable peace between Baku and Yerevan.
“The Italian prime minister reaffirmed Rome’s commitment to the stability and prosperity of the Caucasus region, as well as its support for the normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan for a lasting peace to be achieved,” the press service of the Italian prime minister said.
In addition, Meloni highlighted the importance of Azerbaijan’s cooperation with the EU.
During the meeting, the parties confirmed the strategic nature of the partnership, which they intend to build in all sectors, starting with the energy one.
As a result of the meeting, the Italian oil and gas company Eni SpA and the Azerbaijani state oil company SOCAR signed three memorandums of understanding in the fields of energy security, reduction of gas emissions, and biofuel production.
On Sept. 4, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev was on an official visit to Rome with his wife Mehriban Aliyeva at the invitation of Italian President Sergio Mattarella.
