Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has announced his intention to move the country’s capital further south, RIA Novosti writes.
According to Pezeshkian, they cannot leave Tehran as the main city of the republic due to economic reasons. The president clarified that the new capital will be located closer to the coast of the Persian Gulf. All state agencies will be moved there, and then the residents of Tehran will be able to move to the city.
The current capital is located in the north of Iran, at the foot of the Alborz mountain range, 90 km south of the coast of the Caspian Sea. Tehran became the country’s capital in 1786.
