Zakharova: Before making statements about the Russian border guards, perhaps Alen Simonyan had better give a word to those who put their lives on the table?
At a press briefing, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova commented on Armenian NA President Alen Simonyan’s statement that Armenia should consider the withdrawal of Russian border guards from the border between Turkey and Iran.
“Perhaps, Alen Robertovich did not attentively listen to Nikol Vovajovich’s press conference. The basic document regulating the activities of our border guards is the 1992 bilateral agreement on the status of border guard troops. It is timeless. Russian border guards, together with their Armenian brothers in arms, have been guarding the borders of Armenia for more than 30 years. They have proved the necessity of their presence in Armenia more than once. From the point of view of the activities of the border guards, a very effective cooperation has been established, which annoys some politicians in Yerevan,” Zakharova noted.
She added that before withdrawing the Russian border guards, it is necessary to think about the security of Armenia, in the absence of a complete normalization of relations in the region. “Besides, people who make such judgments without being experts of the field, maybe they should first give a word to those who put their lives on the table, really preserving the borders of Armenia, and not sitting on comfortable sofas,” Zakharova noted.
