The U.S. Helsinki Commission held a hearing on the situation in Armenia. Former OSCE Ambassador Dan Baer says the situation in the South Caucasus is difficult.
“Armenia has found itself in the midst of a huge regional dynamic movement, which it did not create. However, Armenians want a democratic future, and we will continue to be by their side in this aspiration,” Baer said.
Referring to Azerbaijan, he noted that Ilham Aliyev uses energy resources to trade with the EU. According to the ambassador, due to the war in Ukraine and the victory in Nagorno-Karabakh, Azerbaijan has become an important country in the region. The U.S. has to cooperate with Baku because it has no other choice, but the decisions should be such that even if they are beneficial in the short term, in the long term, they not only do not undermine the stability of other countries in the region, but also the safe and prosperous prospects of Azerbaijan for the future.
