Iranian hackers stole information from Donald Trump’s presidential campaign and sent it to Joe Biden’s campaign, the BBC writes, referring to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. intelligence services.
“Hackers, on their own initiative, sent letters to persons related to President Biden’s pre-election campaign. The emails contained excerpts of information stolen from former President Trump’s campaign,” the joint statement said.
According to intelligence agencies, no one from the Biden campaign responded to those letters. The incident took place in June and July of this year, before Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race.
According to the report, the Iranians also sent the information stolen from the Trump campaign to the U.S. press.
U.S. officials announced in August that Iran is trying to increase discord in the U.S. and undermine people’s faith in the state institutions before the presidential election in November. According to the statements of the American authorities, the Iranians tried to gain direct access to the Republican and Democratic campaigns, using, in particular, “social engineering” methods.
Karoline Leavitt, the spokeswoman for Donald Trump’s campaign, told the BBC that the FBI’s and the intelligence report prove that Iran wanted to help Kamala Harris and Joe Biden. According to Leavitt, they are well aware in Iran that Trump will bring back the tough sanctions.
Kamala Harris campaign spokesperson Morgan Finkelstein said they have been cooperating with law enforcement since learning of the hack.
