Georgia’s prime minister responds to European Parliament resolution on funding freezing

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze called the resolution adopted by the European Parliament unfair and ineffective.

On Wednesday, at the plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, the deputies dissatisfied with the politics of Tbilisi approved the resolution “On the retreat from democracy and threats to political pluralism in Georgia”.

Four hundred and ninety-five deputies voted in favor, 73 against, and 86 abstained. The resolution calls on the EU and its member states to hold accountable and impose personal sanctions against all those responsible for undermining democracy in Georgia. Among them is Bidzina Ivanishvili, founder of the ruling Georgian Dream party. The resolution envisages freezing all EU funding to the country.

“This resolution being unfair is completely obvious: The issue of punishing the Georgian Dream and that of protecting the Opposition party of Mikheil Saakashvili, former chairman of the United National Movement, is being considered again. Of course, it is an unfair document. It has no value for us, like the previous three resolutions, and it will be as ineffective as the previous three,” Kobakhidze said.

The prime minister is sure that the reason for the adoption of such documents is that some forces cannot come to terms with the idea that Georgia has not opened a “second front” against Russia.
