National Hero Vahagn Asatryan would have turned 47 today
Today is the birthday of Vahagn Asatryan, a National Hero of Armenia. Asatryan had graduated from five military academies. In the years of his military education and service, for him Monte Melkonyan was the quintessence of a hero, of a military commander. During his military service, he was guided by a certain set of beliefs that he had developed: a commander must be well-educated, an officer must be well-read.
On Sept. 27, on the day of the breakout of the war, together with his military unit, Asatryan left for Syunik Province. On the same day, they left for Shahumyan Province of the Republic of Artsakh. On the first days of October, due to the strategy designed by Vahagn Asatryan and under his command, the unit was able to retake the “Chains” (Shghtaner) position of Shahumyan Province, incurring one casualty.
Later, he was transferred from Shahumyan Province to the Jrakan positions in Hadrut Province of the Republic of Artsakh; there they came under blockade. Fighting, they managed to break the blockade, although, according to the eyewitness accounts, there was no chance to survive in those conditions.
During the military operations, the Azerbaijani armed forces were pursuing Vahagn Asatryan along the entire front. According to the radio reconnaissance reports, the Azerbaijani armed forces were ordered to immediately eliminate Vahagn Asatryan with a Smerch rocket launcher in case of finding him.
Along with his unit of special operations forces, Asatryan fought fierce battles in the town of Hadrut and its environs. He fell in the battles for Hadrut.
He was married and had two sons. The hero would have turned 47 today.
