State of emergency declared in Venezuela

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has signed a decree declaring a state of emergency in the country.

“The purpose of the U.S. attack is to seize Venezuela’s oil and mineral resources. We will resist imperialist aggression by activating all defense plans,” the Venezuelan government said in a statement.

Earlier today the United States carried out airstrikes on Venezuela’s capital, Caracas.
