Mass evacuations underway in Aleppo as clashes intensify

The situation in Aleppo remains tense as clashes between Syrian Democratic Forces and the Syrian army have escalated, particularly in predominantly Kurdish neighborhoods. Speaking to ABC Media by phone, Armenian community spokesperson in Aleppo, Zhirayr Reisyan, said the fighting was especially intense yesterday.

“Yesterday, the situation worsened significantly. Neighborhoods were almost entirely emptied, with people leaving their homes en masse,” Reisyan said.

He added that while a full assessment of the overnight situation is difficult, clashes continued into the morning, though at a lower intensity.

“There is a requirement for residents to leave their homes, as these areas are being treated as military zones. This is reportedly being done to prevent casualties in any new clashes,” Reisyan explained.

He also commented on the safety of the Armenian community, noting that Armenian-populated areas, particularly the Nor Gyugh neighborhood—which houses a school, church, and other community facilities—are located near the Kurdish districts.

“We are naturally taking precautions. Thankfully, at this time, there have been no casualties or serious damage reported within the Armenian community,” he stated.

Earlier reports indicated that Aleppo residents from northwestern neighborhoods have been relocating to areas under government control.
