‘What we’re doing is very important’: Trump launches Board of Peace

US President Donald Trump signed the charter officially launching the Board of Peace initiative in Davos, describing the moment as a very exciting day that has been a long time in the making.

Below are the key points from Trump’s speech:

  • What we are doing is very important.
  • Once this board is fully formed, we will be able to do almost anything we want. We will do it jointly with the United Nations.
  • Everyone wants to be a Board of Peace member.
  • Just one year ago, the world was actually on fire—a lot of people didn’t know it.
  • The world is now far richer, safer, and much more peaceful than it was before the start of my second term.
  • Hamas must lay down its arms; if it does not, it will be the end of Hamas.
  • We will achieve great success in Gaza. I will do everything to ensure that Gaza is demilitarized and rebuilt.
  • The leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan have become my friends.
  • No administration in history has achieved such a dramatic turnaround within 12 months.
  • A settlement on the Ukraine war is coming very soon.
  • In June, we destroyed Iran’s nuclear enrichment capability. They were just two months away from acquiring nuclear weapons.
  • Iran wants to talk—and they will talk.

Referring to US operations against ISIS in Syria, Trump said that “very good things are happening,” claiming that threats to Europe, the United States, and the Middle East are “truly diminishing.”

He also criticized the United Nations, joking that it has “enormous potential,” but noting that he has never consulted the UN on any of the eight conflicts he says he has resolved.

The Board of Peace charter was signed by the leaders of 19 countries, including PM Nikol Pashinyan. The signatory countries are Bahrain, Morocco, Argentina, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Hungary, Indonesia, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Pakistan, Paraguay, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the United States, Uzbekistan, and Mongolia.
