The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia plans to open a
\nconsulate general in Kapan in early 2024. Head of the Group of the Russian
\nForeign Ministry for the Opening of the Russian Consulate General in Kapan
\nAndrey Shanin said this to Sputnik Armenia.<\/p>\n
Shanin added that they are now looking for official and
\nprivate residences for the officials.<\/p>\n
According to the diplomat, the motivation behind the
\ndecision to found a Russian diplomatic mission is clear. He noted that the
\nnumber of Russian citizens in the Syunik Province is quite large: the officers
\nof the border guard detachment of Meghri and their families and those Russian
\ncitizens who have to travel to Yerevan for any consular matter.<\/p>\n
“The geographical position of Syunik, its considerable
\ndistance from Yerevan prove the need for a diplomatic mission here.<\/p>\n\n
We have a consulate operating in Gyumri. Those seeking
\nRussian consular assistance in the north of Armenia can apply there, which is
\nwhat they do. Such a mission should have been established here as well sooner
\nor later,” Shanin said.
