The U.N. General Assembly (GA) has voted for a resolution,
\ndemanding a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza.
<\/p><\/p>\n
The General Assembly expressed deep concern over the
\ncatastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and the ongoing suffering
\nof the Palestinian civilian population. The GA highlighted the need to protect
\nthe Israeli and Palestinian civilian population in accordance with
\ninternational law.
<\/p><\/p>\n
The resolution was passed with 153 votes in favor. Among
\nthese countries were Russia, Brazil, Iran, Spain, Canada, China, Cuba, the UAE,
\nSaudi Arabia, France, Switzerland and Sweden. Ten countries, including Austria
\nand Israel, voted against. Twenty-three counties abstained.
<\/p><\/p>\n
Demanding that all parties meet their obligations under
\ninternational law, the resolution also called for the immediate release of all
\nhostages and for humanitarian access.
<\/p><\/p>\n
A similar document was not passed last week, as the U.S.
\nexercised a veto on it.
<\/p><\/p>\n\n
Resolutions adopted by the U.N. General Assembly have no
\nbinding force.
