In recent years, if there is one major lesson the European community has learned, it is that we are vulnerable when we have excessive dependencies, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said at the European Political Community summit in Yerevan.<\/p>\n
“It has been a painful process to realize these dependencies. The first is on imported fossil fuels. It has been a constraining factor for the EU’s internal market, and under the current Middle East conflict, it has become a dead-end issue for us. The volatility of global energy prices is severely harming our competitiveness. But we also have assets — in the form of renewable energy produced within the EU. We must anchor our energy dependence much more firmly in internal, cheaper, and more predictable sources,” she said, adding that we need to “electrify the EU” to ensure its independence.<\/p>\n
According to von der Leyen, the second challenge is security and defense.<\/p>\n
“If there is one new realization over the past four years, it is that we must be able to defend ourselves. That is why we will mobilize €800 billion by 2030 to fill the gaps in these areas, so that we become more independent and can build deterrence systems,” the European official said.<\/p>\n
She noted that speaking about Europe’s independence does not mean turning inward.<\/p>\n
“On the contrary — it means looking outward, working with like-minded partners. And here too there is a symbolic element, as we need stable and reliable supply chains.
