EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has strongly defended the European External Action Service (EEAS), which she leads, in response to proposals suggesting it should be shut down, Politico<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n

Earlier, the Financial Times reported that the EU was considering a radical overhaul of the diplomatic service following perceived failures in foreign policy. Among the proposals was a plan to reduce the agency’s autonomy and transfer the powers of the European diplomatic service to the foreign ministries of the countries.<\/p>\n

Following the reports, Kallas sent a letter to approximately 5,000 EEAS staff members. At the same time, she welcomed discussions on reform, saying that such ideas would be addressed at an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers.<\/p>\n
