US officials and representatives of the US-backed Board of Peace believe that police forces controlled by Hamas will begin turning over weapons to Gaza’s interim authorities within the next two weeks, the Associated Press<\/a> reports, citing sources.<\/p>\n

US officials are optimistic about the prospects for a swift implementation of the second phase of the Gaza peace agreement.<\/p>\n

However, for now, discussions are focused only on Hamas-controlled police forces. The timeline for disarming the group’s main military units, including the transfer of heavy weapons, remains unclear. According to separate assessments by US officials and the Board of Peace, the process could take between 200 and 350 days.<\/p>\n

Axios reported on Thursday that the agreement envisages a series of steps over the next seven to eight months, including the destruction of tunnels and facilities used by Hamas for weapons production.<\/p>\n

Earlier, US President Donald Trump said that the Board of Peace, established at Washington’s initiative, had reached an agreement on the complete disarmament of Hamas and other armed groups in Gaza.
