Azerbaijan has sued CNN over claims in a June article that Israeli troops were sent to Azerbaijan during the height of the US–Israeli war against Iran, OC media reports.<\/p>\n
The Azerbaijani pro-government news agency wrote that Baku had demanded CNN retract the article on three separate occasions, but that it had refused to do so.<\/p>\n
The article in question cited four anonymous sources and alleged Israel deployed ‘elite military and intelligence units’ to Azerbaijan as ‘part of a network of covert sites across the Middle East to facilitate operations against Iran’.<\/p>\n
According to two of the sources who spoke with CNN, the Israeli forces operated across several locations in southern Azerbaijan, including in one location around 100 kilometres from the Iranian city of Tabriz.<\/p>\n
‘’Special commando units were also deployed to the location and carried out intelligence-gathering missions and drone operations, the other two sources said, giving Israel a valuable perch from which to see into northern Iran during the war’’, CNN reported.<\/p>\n
Baku denied this statement. In January 2026, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov reiterated to his Iranian counterpart Seyed Abbas Araghchi that Azerbaijani territory would ‘never’ be used by ‘any state’ to launch attacks against Iran.<\/p>\n
In a response to the June 2026 CNN article, Azerbaijan’s Embassy in the US rejected what they termed ‘’unfounded claims’’.<\/p>\n
