The Russian military base in Gyumri plays a key role in Armenia’s security; there is currently no alternative to it, stated Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry.<\/p>\n
“The Russian military base in Gyumri is one of the supporting elements of the security architecture of both Armenia and the South Caucasus as a whole. Moreover, no tangible alternative is currently visible,” Zakharova stated at a briefing.<\/p>\n
She emphasized that Russia intends to comply with bilateral agreements with Armenia on the presence of the Russian contingent, including the military base in Gyumri, and expects a similar approach from Yerevan.<\/p>\n
Zakharova also noted that Russia is ready to discuss the expansion of military cooperation with Armenia.<\/p>\n
“As for military cooperation, we are ready to discuss the prospects for its expansion within the framework of the inventory of bilateral ties proposed by Prime Minister Pashinyan, as he put it,” Zakharova stated at a briefing.<\/p>\n
