A second vote in three months is required for the decision to take effect. During the plenary session, 106 deputies voted in favor of repealing the constitutional article prohibiting the stationing of nuclear weapons in the country, 6 abstained, and 18 voted against, <a href=\"https:\/\/tass.ru\/mezhdunarodnaya-panorama\/28185697\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TASS<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Lifting the ban on the deployment of nuclear weapons removes legal security restrictions that distinguished us from other EU and NATO countries,&rdquo; said Seimas Speaker Juozas Olekas.<\/p>\n<p>The Seimas resolution provides for the removal of Article 137 from the constitution, which prohibits the deployment of weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear weapons, on Lithuanian territory. The same article also prohibits the presence of foreign military bases. Vilnius is currently seeking to have the United States establish such a base in the republic.<\/p>\n<p>The Seimas must vote on the constitutional amendment twice with a three-month interval. The change must be supported by a qualified majority of 94 out of 141 votes.
