The US President asserted that the agreement takes effect “immediately,” though he provided no further details.<\/p>\n

“Starting today, an energy ceasefire in the war between Russia and Ukraine takes effect. Both sides have agreed to this. Do not break it!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.<\/p>\n

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy initially expressed surprise regarding the statement, but later said Kyiv would support the initiative if Moscow does the same. He also accused Russia of striking Ukrainian energy facilities.<\/p>\n

Trump urged Kyiv to stop attacking Russian oil refineries amid the announcement of an agreement regarding diesel fuel supplies from Russia to the US and global markets. He also harshly criticized Zelenskyy, stating that Ukraine needs a new president.<\/p>\n

The diesel deal is facing growing criticism. Zelenskyy called it a gift to Vladimir Putin and an investment in the war. European officials and several American politicians, including some Republicans, stated they do not support the decision.<\/p>\n

Seven senators—three Democrats and four Republicans—issued a statement saying Trump’s deal directly violates the law prohibiting imports of Russian energy.<\/p>\n

UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting also stated that London does not support Donald Trump’s diesel agreement with Vladimir Putin. He noted that Washington and its allies should focus on increasing pressure on Russia.<\/p>\n

This deal is another attempt by Trump to lower domestic fuel prices ahead of the congressional midterm elections. It follows months of dealing with the political fallout of the war with Iran, which led to a surge in global fuel prices, especially for diesel. This is not the first time Trump has announced an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. He last did so in September, but neither Moscow nor Kyiv confirmed any agreement at the time, and mutual attacks on energy infrastructure continued.<\/p>\n

Axios reported, citing a White House official, that Trump’s statement about an energy ceasefire allegedly referred only to a potential deal that envisions stopping attacks on oil refineries. According to the official, if mutual strikes on refineries stop, the next step could be an agreement to refrain from attacking other energy infrastructure facilities.<\/p>\n

“The Russians are considering this proposal,” the White House official told Axios.<\/p>\n

A Ukrainian official told Axios that Ukraine has only one oil refinery, which has been repeatedly attacked by Russia and is not fully operational. Russia, in contrast, has an extensive network of such refineries.<\/p>\n

The Financial Times reported, citing European officials, that the White House administration is threatening to halt the operation of the procurement system that supplies Ukraine with weapons to force Kyiv to stop deep strikes into Russian territory targeting energy infrastructure.
