Azerbaijan’s ruling “New Azerbaijan” party has issued a statement noting that Oktay Saral, chief advisor to the Turkish president, and deputies of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) are making “populist and irresponsible” statements without taking into account the essence of the issue regarding the ban on wearing hijabs in Azerbaijan.<\/p>\n
According to the “New Azerbaijan” party, such statements contradict the spirit of Azerbaijani-Turkish fraternal relations and can contribute to the artificial escalation of tension in society.<\/p>\n
“No state in the Islamic world has the right to dictate its will to other Muslim nations, interfere in their internal affairs, or consider itself superior to others. Claims to serve the unity of the Muslim world must be confirmed not by hegemonic ambitions, but by equal cooperation and mutual respect,” the statement notes, adding that “turning Azerbaijan’s secular state system and educational policy into a subject of political manipulation is unacceptable.”<\/p>\n
“Political discussions surrounding religious and secular values in Turkey itself are deepening polarization within society. We believe that using such sensitive issues as wearing a headscarf as a tool for political manipulation and division serves neither the unity of the Turkish people nor the solidarity of the Muslim world as a whole. Using such issues as a tool of political pressure against Azerbaijan is especially unacceptable. We urge the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) to refrain from this destructive policy,” Aliyev’s party stated, emphasizing that recently “the information campaign against Azerbaijan has become more aggressive, systematic, and openly slanderous.”<\/p>\n
“The principle of ”One Nation, Two States,” defined by National Leader Heydar Aliyev, forms the spiritual and political foundation of Azerbaijani-Turkish relations. However, the essence of this historical expression must not be allowed to be distorted. We are talking precisely about one nation and two independent states. This principle by no means provides grounds for one state to interfere in the internal affairs of another or to impose its political and ideological approaches upon it.<\/p>\n
