Actor Joe Manganiello releases ”Bloodlines,” a memoir of his Armenian Genocide survivor roots and secret health battle.<\/p>\n
The 320-page book tells the story of a 7-year secret struggle with health problems, during which he also uncovered his family’s history of surviving the Armenian Genocide. Prior to the book’s publication, the public was unaware of the actor’s illness.<\/p>\n
A series of autoimmune diseases had affected his skin, thyroid, eyes, lungs, and digestive system. Doctors were unable to fully explain his condition. He faced death several times, and saving his life required amputation.<\/p>\n
”It was the most brutally difficult time of my life, one I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy, but also my greatest adventure,” Manganiello said in a statement to PEOPLE.<\/p>\n
Looking for answers, he turned to shamanic practices, pagan rituals, ancient myths and old family records. That search led him to his Armenian ancestry and the inherited trauma he carried.<\/p>\n
His maternal great-grandmother survived the Armenian Genocide in 1915. Turkish soldiers shot her husband and 7 of her 8 children dead and shot her too. She lived by pretending to be dead.<\/p>\n
