“We see the methods of pressure being used against countries that declare their intention to join the EU or become candidate countries. They are being pressured to relinquish their sovereignty. Even before formally joining the EU, they are required, as a condition of accession, to align themselves with the EU’s common foreign and security policy and endorse all of its statements. The deputy foreign minister added that Russia believes “the less influence exerted by countries from outside the region, the more stable the situation will be.”

According to Grushko, the countries of the region will sit down at the negotiating table and, “as they have done for centuries, resolve whatever problems arise.”
