Saudi Arabia has proposed that Turkey establish a military base on its territory. The facility could be modelled on the Turkish military base in Qatar.<\/p>\n
Turkey’s base in Qatar has been operating under a bilateral agreement since 2015. According to publicly available information, it hosts approximately 3,000 Turkish troops and is used for joint exercises and training personnel of the Qatari Armed Forces.<\/p>\n
The possibility of establishing a Turkish military base in Saudi Arabia could be considered after the parliament ratifies the Mecca Agreement on mutual defence cooperation between Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. The document passed through the parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee this week and now awaits approval by the full legislature. The parliament would also need to authorise the deployment of troops abroad and adopt a separate resolution on establishing the base, should Turkish lawmakers deem it necessary.<\/p>\n
Under its emerging security doctrine, Turkey is considering expanding its military presence across several continents, particularly in Africa and Asia, through bilateral agreements and arrangements within various alliances. This strategy is partly driven by US plans to reduce its direct military presence in the Middle East in 2027–2028.<\/p>\n
“Turkey’s objective in this new era is to use its military capabilities not only to defend its own borders but also to establish deterrence and strengthen its diplomatic influence in various regions where it has security interests,” Turkish media report.<\/p>\n
Turkey maintains military bases in 12 countries. Its largest overseas military deployment is in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, where more than 30,000 troops are stationed.
