US President Donald Trump has not ruled out expanding military operations against Iran, saying that Washington’s actions will be guided by what is in the country’s best interests.

Trump made the remarks in a telephone interview with Politico.

“We will watch the situation, and if we see an opportunity to do something, we will do what is best for our country,” Trump said when asked about the possibility of escalating military operations against Iran.

Asked whether the United States might use nuclear weapons, the US president said there was no need to do so.

“I don’t need to do that. We’ve already knocked out 90% of their capabilities. So there’s no need for it,” Trump said.

He added that he believed his decision regarding Iran would prove to be the right one in the long term, both for the United States and for the world. According to Trump, although rising oil prices are being linked to the conflict with Iran, his decision was the right one from the perspective of long-term interests.

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, said that if the United States attacks again, Iran’s response will be on a much larger scale.

According to Khamenei, Iran’s establishment of control over the Strait of Hormuz and the destruction of US military bases in regional countries were responses to the war that began in February.

Khamenei also commented on the US midterm elections. The Iranian Supreme Leader stressed that those who believe a change of political parties in power in the United States or concessions to pressure from Washington could ease US “hostility towards Iran” are mistaken.

Khamenei said that even the slightest inclination to make concessions would only encourage the United States to go further and “cross the line.”
