The roads of Shushi were glowing red-hot from the explosion
\nof shells. Fierce battles were going on there. Mayor of Shushi Artsvik Sargsyan
\nsaid this to ABC Media.

“On Nov. 7, battles were taking place in the environs of
\nShushi. The situation was calm on Nov. 8. On Nov. 9, their State Flag Day, the
\nenemy’s flag was flying over the municipality building. We knew that we had to
\nmount a counterattack and drive the enemy out of the city. However, that
\nnotorious document was signed on the night of Nov. 9, thus putting an end to
\neverything,” the mayor said.

Residents of the city were evacuated to a safer place. Those
\nwho had the opportunity, left the city on their own. The rest were provided
\nwith cars by the state.

“From the first day, people were leaving of their own
\naccord. However, on Oct. 29, we received an order to evacuate the residents of
\nthe city. All the children, women and elderly people were evacuated. Afterward,
\nI returned to Shushi. Few were left there,” Sargsyan said.

Few objects of cultural heritage were evacuated from the
\nfive museums of Shushi. During the war, a small batch was transferred from the
\nGeological Museum of Shushi to the Shushi State Museum of Fine Arts —
\nsupposedly a safer place. According to the mayor, it was only from the Armenian
\nDram Museum that they were able to evacuate objects.
