People are gathering in Place de la Bastille, Paris, to express their displeasure with French President Emmanuel Macron’s refusal to appoint Lucie Castets, the candidate of the left-wing New Popular Front (NPF) coalition, as prime minister and demand the leader’s resignation.<\/p>\n
Leftists were also angered by the appointment of Michel Barnier, a representative of the center-right Republicans Party, as the new prime minister. His party took fourth place in the snap parliamentary elections held in the summer of 2024.<\/p>\n
L’Est Républicain reports that the authorities expect up to 30,000 protesters across the country, with 8,000 in Paris.<\/p>\n
