From a chemistry teacher to the head of Hezbollah: Who is the new leader of the movement?
Chemistry teacher as the new head of Hezbollah. The Lebanese Hezbollah movement has a new leader. Naim Qassem, 71, has taken over as the new leader of Hezbollah after Israel killed Hassan Nasrallah. Qassem is one of the most famous figures of the Lebanese movement and has been Nasrallah’s deputy for more than 30 years.
After the assassination of Nasrallah, it was Qassem who announced three times in a TV address on behalf of Hezbollah the readiness to secure a ceasefire with Israel.
Qassem was born in Beirut in 1953. He is one of the founders of Hezbollah. In 2006, when a full-scale war was going on between Lebanon and Hezbollah, Nasrallah practically stopped appearing in public, and it was Qassem who spoke on behalf of the movement. After Qassem’s appointment, Israel announced that he could also suffer the fate of Nasrallah and Hashem Safieddine, who were killed by the Israel Defence Forces (IDF). Details in the video:
