Russian Foreign Ministry official: The Russian Consulate General in Kapan will open in early 2024

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia plans to open a
consulate general in Kapan in early 2024. Head of the Group of the Russian
Foreign Ministry for the Opening of the Russian Consulate General in Kapan
Andrey Shanin said this to Sputnik Armenia.

Shanin added that they are now looking for official and
private residences for the officials.

According to the diplomat, the motivation behind the
decision to found a Russian diplomatic mission is clear. He noted that the
number of Russian citizens in the Syunik Province is quite large: the officers
of the border guard detachment of Meghri and their families and those Russian
citizens who have to travel to Yerevan for any consular matter.

“The geographical position of Syunik, its considerable
distance from Yerevan prove the need for a diplomatic mission here.

We have a consulate operating in Gyumri. Those seeking
Russian consular assistance in the north of Armenia can apply there, which is
what they do. Such a mission should have been established here as well sooner
or later,” Shanin said.
