Russian Foreign Ministry: The ratification of the ICC Rome Statute by Armenia will most negatively affect the relations between Armenia and Russia
The ratification of the ICC Rome Statute by Armenia will
most negatively affect the relations between the two countries. Yerevan has not
considered Moscow’s proposals concerning the statute. The Russian Ministry of
Foreign Affairs issued a statement on this.
“The Armenian partners were informed of Russia’s stance on
the matter from the outset: The ratification of the ICC Rome Statute by Armenia
is unacceptable to Russia in view of the fact that that organization issued an
arrest warrant for Russia’s head of government.
We considered Yerevan’s initiative to conclude a bilateral
agreement. Moscow proposed a compromise solution that would benefit both sides.
Unfortunately, this was not taken into account; instead, a political decision
has been made in Armenia to ratify the Rome Statute. This will most negatively
affect the relations between the two countries. After the ratification of the
Rome Statute by Armenia, the visits of the Russian leadership to Armenia will
be difficult to imagine,” reads the statement.
