Syrian defense minister: The future of Russian bases in Syria is under negotiation

Questions regarding the future of Russian military bases in Syria and the relationship between Russia and Syria are currently in the negotiation phase, Murhaf Abu Qasra, Defense Minister for Syria’s transitional government, said. Russian military personnel are stationed at the Khmeimim Air Base and at the Russian naval facility in Tartus.

“It is still unclear what the final decision will be. We have not yet received instructions. However, negotiations are under way, led by the leadership with participation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” Syria’s defense minister stated.

According to Kommersant, under a bilateral agreement, Russia can use military bases in Syrian territory until 2066.
