Orbán: EU will soon reassess its financial support plans for Ukraine

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán believes that the EU will review its support plans for Ukraine within weeks. Orbán made this statement during an interview on Kossuth Radio.

Hungary was the only EU member state that did not support the final document of the extraordinary summit regarding the situation in Ukraine on March 6. Orbán announced that Hungary will conduct a survey among its population regarding Ukraine’s EU membership, as he believes this issue must be resolved before any decision on financial support for Ukraine can be made by the community.

According to him, Brussels is currently “calculating” the costs of maintaining the Ukrainian army, which Volodymyr Zelenskyy allegedly wishes to increase to a million, as well as the expenses associated with maintaining the functioning of the Ukrainian state.

“They are calculating now. And I think the result of these calculations will be that we cannot afford it. I believe that the Hungarian perspective will emerge in this European debate at the right time, and it will become clear that we will destroy ourselves if we do what 26 member states deemed right yesterday,” Orbán stated.

The Hungarian prime minister noted that the EU is not the only entity whose funds will not suffice to achieve all objectives, noting that such goals could not even be accomplished with financial participation from the U.S.
