IMCA participants call on WHO to restore right of the people of Artsakh to health
Two thousand five hundred participants of the 6th
International Medical Congress of Armenia, along with its presidency and the
Armenian Medical International Committee, addressed a letter to World Health
Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. They called on him to
take immediate measures to tackle the humanitarian crisis caused by the illegal
blockade of Artsakh by Azerbaijan and to force Azerbaijan to lift the illegal
blockade by putting the levers of the organization into use. Similar letters on
behalf of the Congress will be sent to the relevant U.N. agencies.
The letter addressed to the WHO reads:
“Our compatriots there struggle for daily bread and are
denied access to basic health services. The Azerbaijani authorities continue to
ignore the calls of the international community to lift the blockade and don’t
abide by the decision of the International Court of Justice.
As people who took the Hippocratic Oath, any situation,
where the fundamental human right to health is violated is unacceptable to us.
With this letter, we want to ask you to do everything within your power and, by
putting the levers of the organization into use, to stop the inhuman blockade of
Nagorno-Karabakh by Azerbaijan. We expect that practical and effective
measures, in accordance with WHO values, will be taken to alleviate the
suffering of the people of Nagorno-Karabakh and to protect them from the
continuous aggression of repressive Azerbaijan.”
