US to export civil nuclear technology to Armenia, says ambassador
U.S.-Armenia relations are currently deeper and stronger than ever, U.S. Ambassador to Armenia Kristina Kvien said.
“In American diplomatic circles, the status of strategic partnership is reserved for countries with which we share close friendship and collaboration. This status defines the framework and mechanisms of bilateral relations and demonstrates that we work with that country as equals, promoting mutually beneficial ties,” the ambassador noted.
She added that the strategic partnership marked only the first step of progress this year.
Ambassador Kvien also spoke about the declaration signed in Washington in August regarding the TRIPP project.
Referring to the signed memorandum of understanding, she stated that one of its goals is to establish comprehensive bilateral cooperation on energy security.
“Capabilities in civil nuclear energy are a key component of Armenia’s energy security. To this end, the United States and Armenia are negotiating a so-called ‘123 Agreement,’ which would allow the U.S. to export civil nuclear technologies to Armenia.
This agreement will enhance cooperation, as Armenia envisions transitioning the Metsamor Nuclear Reactor to modern, flexible systems. The United States, as a global leader in nuclear energy and industry, offers Armenia numerous opportunities to ensure the safe and secure operation of nuclear energy and to advance energy independence for the future.
Our partnership on energy security will help diversify Armenia’s energy resources, modernize the grid, and ensure reliable energy supply for businesses and communities,” Kvien said.
