Arman Tatoyan: Tigranashen has never had enclave status; There is another Armenian village in faraway Nakhijevan

Former Human Rights Defender (Ombudsman) of Armenia Arman Tatoyan writes: “I have already referred to this topic. Here are some historical facts about Tigranashen: the village has never had the status of “enclave”. Historically, it is an Armenian village and used to be part of both the First Republic of Armenia and Soviet Armenia. It had the name of Karke. As for Karki, it has Azerbaijani origins.

There is another Armenian village in the immediate vicinity of Tigranashen, toward the faraway parts of Nakhijevan. It is the historical Armenian village of Genut. Its name is derived from the name of the evergreen tree “juniper” (gihi) and it also used to be part of Soviet Armenia. In the course of time, after the Turkish Jafarlu clan settled in the village, it was divided into two parts and acquired the names Jafarlu and Gyunut. For example, the Armenian SSR map of 1926 shows it as part of Armenia. The mere fact that one part of a settlement is inhabited by representatives of a certain nation, does not automatically imply that this territory belongs to the state of that very nation. The same holds true for the historical Armenian villages of Tavush province. For example, the village of Voskepar was part of Barana region of Ijevan canton both in 1918-1920 and during the Soviet period.”
