Rubio says Trump intends to buy Greenland

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has told American lawmakers that Washington prefers to purchase Greenland rather than resort to military intervention, The Wall Street Journal reports, citing sources.

Rubio made the remarks on Jan. 5 during a closed-door meeting with members of the U.S. Congress. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Caine were also present. While the meeting focused primarily on military operations in Venezuela, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (Democrat, New York) asked whether the administration intended to use military force elsewhere, such as in Mexico or Greenland.

As noted, Rubio responded that recent threats by the Trump administration should not be interpreted as signs of an inevitable invasion, as the goal is to acquire the island from Denmark.

The Wall Street Journal also reported that Trump and senior members of his administration have publicly stated that they do not rule out the use of military force to establish control over Greenland.

“The option of using US military force remains at the disposal of the commander-in-chief,” the newspaper quoted White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt as saying.
