Trump advisers meet with Russia’s ambassador in Paris over Ukraine
The US administration and Ukrainian representatives have reached an agreement on a peace deal and are awaiting a response from Russian President Vladimir Putin, Axios writes. As noted, the US and Ukraine have aligned on “almost all aspects” of the proposed plan.
Sources say Trump advisers Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner met with Russian Ambassador Kirill Dmitriev in Paris to review the US strategy for achieving peace in Ukraine.
As noted, so far, Putin has shown no public indication that he is willing to agree to or seriously consider the proposed agreement between the US and Ukraine.
The meeting with the Russian ambassador followed two days of talks involving Witkoff and Kushner with senior Ukrainian and European officials, including President Volodymyr Zelensky and leaders from the U.K., France, and Germany. These discussions focused on two key sticking points: security guarantees for Ukraine and potential territorial concessions in eastern Donbas.
Zelensky said the day before that the US-Ukraine security guarantees agreement is “essentially ready to be finalized at the highest level with Trump.”
Ukrainian officials were informed that the US would coordinate with Russia on the current proposal. Ukrainian officials told Axios that Zelensky may travel to the US next week to meet with Trump and formally finalize the security guarantees agreement, or the two leaders could meet at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
