Japan’s PM announces dissolution of Parliament’s Lower House

Japan’s Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, has announced that she will dissolve the Lower House of Parliament on Jan. 23, Japan Today writes.

“As Prime Minister, I have decided to dissolve the House of Representatives on Jan. 23,” Takaichi stated.

Discussing the reasons for her decision, Takaichi stated that her tenure as head of government “depends on the people.”

“I would like the people themselves to decide whether they can trust me to govern the country,” Takaichi added, noting that in Japan, the prime minister is chosen by members of parliament. She also pointed out that during the last elections at the end of 2024, there had been no discussion of her leading the government.
