Zatulin calls Armenia–US nuclear deal attack on Russia’s interests

The agreement between Armenia and the United States on civilian nuclear energy, which includes $9 billion in American investment, is an attack on Russia’s interests and influence in the region, Konstantin Zatulin, First Deputy Chairman of Russia’s State Duma CIS Affairs Committee, told RTVI.

He stated that the Metsamor nuclear power plant, which currently supplies electricity to Armenia alongside Russian gas, was renovated and restarted thanks to Russia after several years of inactivity.

“Now Mr. Pashinyan, for whom this means absolutely nothing, is signing deals with the Americans. In other words, he is abandoning cooperation with Rosatom, which has so far operated in Armenia, in favor of working with the Americans. Isn’t this an attack on our interests, our influence, and our prospects? Of course it is,” Zatulin noted.
