‘Our demands are legitimate’: Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson on response to US proposal

Iran’s response to a US peace proposal includes provisions calling for the lifting of the US blockade and the unfreezing of Iranian assets, Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said on Monday.

“Our demands are legitimate. They include an end to war, an end to blockade and piracy, as well as the unfreezing of Iranian assets that have been unjustly frozen in banks due to US pressure,” he said during a press briefing.

“Ensuring the safety of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and establishing security in the region and Lebanon are also among Iran’s demands.”

On Feb․ 28, the United States and Israel began striking targets in Iran, killing more than 3,000 people. Washington and Tehran announced a ceasefire on April 8. Subsequent talks in Islamabad ended in failure, with no reports of renewed hostilities. However, the United States began a blockade of Iranian ports.
