It will affect Armenia’s economy; Armenians working in Russia will face difficulties: Zakharova on termination of Mir cards
Unfortunately, we should note that in this regard, as well, Yerevan gave in to pressure from Western countries. Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova said this, commenting on the termination of transactions with Russian Mir cards in the territory of Armenia.
“The economy will of course suffer from this; people will face certain difficulties; Armenians working in Russia will have difficulty making bank transfers; tourists will not be able to pay by card either. Let me remind you that their number exceeded one million last year. There are other examples as well of how this will affect the Armenian economy,” Zakharova said.
To remind, the use of Russian Mir cards has been suspended in Armenian banks since March 30 this year. Mir, i.e., the Russian card payment system, became the target of U.S. sanctions in February, 2024. Washington claims that through this payment system, “Russia bypasses sanctions, maintaining ties with the global financial system”.
