Husband and wife or a partner? Istanbul Convention in context of National Assembly’s new bill
Is the Istanbul Convention relevant again? There were discussions in the National Assembly yesterday; a new bill was brought before Parliament and was ratified after it got its first reading. However, the project on making amendments and additions to the law “On Prevention of Domestic Violence, Protection of Victims of Domestic Violence and Restoration of Family Solidarity” did not meet with the approval of the Opposition, the Mother See and the public.
According to the bill, after amendments to the Constitution, the terms “husband” or “wife” will be replaced by the term “partner”. Expert in constitutional law Gohar Meloyan says this is not the first time that this bill is brought before Parliament. In 2019, when the ruling political force, KP, wanted to ratify the Istanbul Convention, a similar bill was put into circulation, but it did not go into force back then, as it was not approved then either.
