Slovak prime minister shot in assassination attempt

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot and seriously injured on Wednesday; The suspect has been arrested, Slovak newspaper Dennik N writes.

The assassination attempt against Fico took place in the Slovak town of Handlova, when, after a government meeting, the Slovak prime minister came out to greet the people waiting for him.

Fico was hospitalized; the police arrested the suspect and cordoned off the area, evacuating people from the cultural center where the government meeting had been held.

The motive for the attack is unknown. Slovak President Zuzana Caputova called the assassination attempt “cruelty and recklessness.”
