90 die in devastating storm in US

At least 90 people died in Hurricane Helene, which hit the southeastern U.S., Reuters reports. Deaths were reported in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee and Virginia.

Millions of people were left without electricity. In addition, cell phone towers in the country are down, so family members are unable to contact many people. Roads and bridges were destroyed; the damage reached $100 billion.

“This is a devastating disaster of historic proportions. People I’ve talked to in the west of North Carolina say they’ve never seen anything like that,” Governor Roy Cooper said.
