Japan’s emperor approves country’s new government

Emperor Naruhito of Japan approved the new Japanese government, which will be headed by Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.

The official ceremony took place today at the Tokyo Imperial Palace, Kyodo news agency reports.
The approval of the Cabinet of Ministers by the Emperor is a mandatory procedure, which is enshrined in the Constitution of Japan.

During the ceremony, the ministers take turns receiving a special document from the Emperor, a notice of appointment, with his signature.

Former Ministers Takeshi Iwaya and Gen Nakatani, have been appointed to the same posts. Katsunobu Katō was appointed minister of Finance.

Thirteen of the 20 members of the government were appointed to the positions of ministers for the first time. There are two women in the government.
